Our collaboration
Iain, the pharmacist at Crail Pharmacy, approached me to redesign his existing website and make it clearer, more useful and easier for patients and customers to engage with.
We began with a focused conversation about what the website needed to do – particularly the key services to highlight, the main calls to action for visitors and the messages that mattered most to his local community. Beyond that, Iain was happy for me to take the lead on design and structure.
I recommended moving away from the IONOS website builder to WordPress, which allowed us to reduce costs while gaining much greater flexibility and long-term control. I used the existing website as a starting point to understand the pharmacy’s services, then rewrote and reorganised the content to improve clarity and usability.
The visual design took inspiration from the pharmacy car branding and the idea of being “at the heart of the community”. This led to a custom graphic banner featuring a heart formed from a montage of pills, echoing the distinctive design used on the vehicle and reinforcing the local identity of the pharmacy.
Practical usability was a key focus. Opening hours were placed prominently at the top of the homepage, and I wrote a small JavaScript enhancement to automatically highlight the current day, making it easier for visitors to check when the pharmacy is open.
Throughout the build, I shared progress with Iain and invited feedback at key points. We iterated quickly on both content and layout, arriving at a final design that met his needs without unnecessary complexity.
As the website is an important channel for patient enquiries, I also carried out testing on the contact forms and added an SMTP solution to improve email reliability. This was tested with Iain before launch.
The project concluded with the site going live on WordPress hosting at IONOS, while removing unnecessary add-ons. This significantly reduced ongoing costs while delivering a more capable and future-proof website.
